Philippe Choulet, philosopher and art historian, invites you to meet at the Café-Philo-Mario to exchange ideas about puppetry. This meeting is organized as a small conference, followed by discussion while taking coffee... to think about the history, the forms, and the techniques of puppetry and apply a few concepts so as to better appreciate the work of puppeteers and their shows. You will see that philosophy finds its echo in puppetry, allowing us to delve into the symbolic and political significance of this art.

Discussed subjects :

> Why an object theater?
> Inanimate objects, do you have a soul?
> The mental space of the puppet, between body, image and symbol
> Manipulation, between black and white magic

Institute anniversary

“The puppetry scene in France and Europe has undergone deep transformation over the last 30 years. Our School and our graduates have had a lot to do with it. The success of our students’ integration in the profession is testament to this. The wealth of destinies, individual journeys and professional contexts in which they practice their art are proof of an intellectual flexibility, a capacity to fit into all kinds of artistic configurations and to establish aesthetic diversity. Our School is not a mould. It encourages encounters. And one is always metamorphosed by the encounter. The School’s new building, which we will inaugurate next September, comes to crown this historical sequence. But actually it is the pursuit of an innovative pedagogy serving the renewal of an art by other means.” Éloi Recoing, Directeur

Puppets : The inside story

9 - L'Igloo.

Fri, Sep. 22 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm

The creator of puppets is three times “hidden” behind the puppet-object. The puppet is in the front line and visible to the audience, and behind it is the manipulator who may also be guided by the director; three roles which may be played by the same person or not. How does a puppet form come about in its relationship with a text, a direction, the constraints of manipulation… in accordance with the sensitivities of the creators of puppets? The constructor/puppeteer hides behind what he has made, but does he also hide socially? Five creators of puppets share their experiences.

Moderation : Raphaèle Fleury, rHead of Research and Documentation Division of the International Puppet Institute - holder of the "la Chaire d'innovation Cirque et Marionnette ICiMa"; Meeting proposed by THEMAA in partnership with the ICiMa and le FMTM.

The Festival uses awareness-raising activities and cultural mediation developed around the art of puppetry, in connection with the actors present on the territory.
The objective is to integrate outside groups early and to advance the mental representations of puppetry, to better grasp and take ownership of the creative approaches, and to fully enjoy the event and the presence of the artists during the Festival. In this way, the Festival creates the possibility of presenting the art of puppetry to new audiences and new territories, real or imaginary.
We build interactions and engage in artistic partnerships with associations, social centers, the hospital, the prison, nurseries, the National Education system (Lycéens au Festival, Collèges en Scène, PAG, artist visits to schools, theatre tours), and all audiences with appointments throughout the year for our 500 volunteers and other interested individuals. The performances of the companies Lez’arts Vers and Tantôt will include people wishing to join an artistic project and to live an important moment of the Festival from the inside.

Shows at the Prison

The Charleville-Mézières prison will host two shows through the association La Marionnette, in charge of cultural projects within the prison. Echoing the Festival, these shows will allow the prisoners to share the enjoyment thanks to two companies appearing in the IN programme.

Shows at the CRFA (Functional rehabilitation centre for adults)

As part of the partnership between the Functional Rehabilitation Centre for Adults in Charleville-Mézières and the Festival, four IN shows are presented to users.

Association d'Education Populaire au Festival

The CEMÉA and the ligue de l'enseignement 08 allows preschool to high school students to discover and fully participate in the Festival.

In front of the public

Students taking the theatre elective at the Lycée Chanzy rerun the experience! After three performances, the students will speak with the artist teams and the public and will share with us their initial review. These meetings, special moments between young theatre enthusiasts, artists, and spectators will lead us to express our emotions and impressions and, quite simply, to better understand the work of artistic creation.

Young critics at the Festival

The project “Young critics at the Festival” is an interdisciplinary project led by the Canopé 08 atelier. It involves four classes of junior high-school students from the Ardennes and aims to enable these students to acquire skills in the field of artistic criticism. They will be both spectators and apprentice journalists.

Course open to professionals of the National Education and Culture system, from Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd September. Training set up by l’Atelier Canopé 08, the International Institute of Puppetry, and the International Festival of Puppetry.

Young children are constantly discovering their world ; this is the age of first-time sensations and emotions.

It is an ideal time to become part of an audience. That is why we are organizing shows in the Festival for very small children and the adults who accompany them (these shows are labeled “very small children” in the programme. We are also developing a programme of shows and awareness workshops in the different districts of Charleville-Mézières and in other towns in the Ardennes department to enable families to take advantage of these events, in partnership with the CAF des Ardennes (Family Allowance Office) and the departmental library. To extend this programme, we are planning a training course: art and culture for very young children. This three-day course on the accompaniment of very young audiences is open to professionals dealing with young children, to parents and anybody who is interested, on September 7th and 21st and October 5th

The themes deal with:

> What is a show for very young children?
> How can we accompany children to a show?
> How should we interpret a show?
> What will emerge from the encounter between very young children and the theatre?

The course is free
 places are limited
